They're photographs of course. I hand coloured some photographs back in the day but I never wanted to be a painter- I like my toys, my cameras too much.

I love New York of course, who doesn't? and from time to time I made some good photos there but I  never felt I'd figured out how I should photograph it. I tried some of my Toronto tricks and they didn't work down there.

Over the past year I've been there a lot, mostly photographing with my iPhone, using apps, and gathering images warped in time and space with the panoramic function. Dense, rough hewn, and resisting elegance, for me it's an abstract expressionist painting town. These photos carry bits of DNA from many a painterly style and technique. And I gave myself the permission to indulge that rather than resist it.
